Star Wars TCG Strikes Back with Twilight of the Republic and an Online Gaming Platform

Star Wars Unlimited fans unite. After the somewhat lacklustre Shadows of the Galaxy, set 3 is upon us with Twilight of the Republic and the new mechanics along with the temporary suspension of leader set 1 Boba has breathed brand new life into the game.

A set introducing the Clone Wars was always likely to be popular and the new exploit mechanics alongside tokens have really helped to move Star Wars Unlimited forward. The exploit rule allows you to sacrifice cheaper units to bring out big boys for cheaper resource prices. The new token mechanic also works with the exploit rule and helps to give us the feeling whilst playing of the total destruction of The Clone Cars.

Personally, I am having a lot of fun using a Green Nute Gunray deck. Red (aggression) Count Dooku is also a lot of fun too as Dooku allows you to stack the new exploit mechanic. To be honest, I just love separatists. I had an awesome three-way game at my local TCG shop where Nute came out on top (with the assistance of Darth Vader) against Set 2 Bob and Pre Vizsla.

As far as the Star Wars Unlimited professional scene goes, the Boba Fett leader card from Spark of Rebellion has been suspended. Again, this was a good move as before he was suspended, players using him as their leader were winning pretty much all of the tournaments. Since Boba’s suspension however, a variety of decks and leaders are winning tournaments, which can only be good for the scene.

Alongside Twilight of the Republic, you should expect to begin seeing the Spark of Rebellion (SoR reprints in your local and online stores too. Plenty of players only got into the game during set two so they missed out on the great cards which set 1 has. Additionally, Spark of Rebellion stock was limited in a lot of places and some stores did not receive much stock at all.

I got into the game in set 2 but still managed to grab two SoR boxes for myself and managed to hit a couple of Darth Vader’s in my second box. I might buy another box for myself but at the moment I love playing the game more than I love opening packs.

If for whatever reason you cannot get down to your local TCG store to play a game of Star Wars Unlimited, then you have the option to play online using a fan-made open source Star Wars Unlimited simulator called Karabast. This tool allows you to build different decks and try them out too. Everything here is for fun and there are no rankings. You can also watch others play too. Having the option to take part in live gaming online ensures that getting into the game is much easier.

Reddit is also a good tool if you want to keep up with Star Wars Unlimited rules and news online. The community is still a small one but it continues to grow. The fact that the game itself really is superb is obviously helping to grow the game a lot too. There are also plenty of Star Wars Unlimited YouTubers which are helping the game reach new audiences.

If you don’t know, the showcase cards are essentially the chase cards in Star Wars Unlimited. They come in the form of leader units but are extremely rare. On average, they will appear from one in every 12 booster boxes.

I have opened six boxes so far without hitting a showcase and have reached the stage where I am no longer chasing one, if it happens it happens. I would love to pack a showcase from Twilight of the Republic though in order to build a deck around it.
